Background

The TRITON project was co funded by the UK and USA governments and the ship launched in 2000 by the British warship builder, Vosper Thornycroft, for use as a trimaran hull technology demonstrator. Information derived from tests and trials of the TRITON were subsequently used to inform the design of the United States Navy “Independence Class” Littoral Combat Ship. The British offshore survey firm, Gardline, bought the ship from the UK Government in 2004 and used it successfully for hydrographic surveys in UK waters until 2006, when TRITON was then mobilised to Australia for service as an OPV with the Australian Border Force.
